Spalding High School reports positive impact

It’s a shocking fact that the number of obese six year olds doubled in the last 10 years and that young people who are obese are more likely to suffer from social discrimination and low self-esteem but with positive play we’ve shown that you can make a difference.

Since September 2004 the Lincolnshire South East School Sport Partnership based at Spalding High School has trained over 200 teachers, support staff and lunchtime supervisors to deliver the Val Sabin ‘Positive Play’ initiative.  In a recent survey about the initiative:-

  • 90% of respondents strongly agreed/agreed that positive play had increased their knowledge and confidence in encouraging playground activities.
  • 94% of respondents strongly agreed/agreed that the positive play manual had supported them in delivery of playground activities.
  • 80% of respondents strongly agreed/agreed that positive play had helped to increase physical activity levels at break and/or lunch times.
  • 71% of respondents strongly agreed/agreed that positive play had helped to improve pupils’ attitude & behaviour at break and/or lunch times.
  • 74% of respondents strongly agreed/agreed that positive play had helped to reduce the number of detentions/incidents at break and/or lunch times.
  • 88% of respondents strongly agreed/agreed that positive play had helped to improve pupils’ confidence/self esteem and enabled them to get more involved in playground activities.
