Positive Play has been very well received since its pilot project held in Corby, Northamptonshire as an initiative supported by the “Challenge for Corby” programme. Recently three different schools where re-visited to see how they had benefited from the initial training.

The schools visited were a primary school, an infant school and a junior school. All schools had found the training extremely valuable. Positive Play has and continues to have a beneficial effect on the lives of these schools. Support staff spoke of the confidence it gave them to tackle the variety of situations faced daily in their school playground. This confidence added to their knowledge of the children has allowed all these schools to move forward.

The three schools had found that playground zoning had helped them most in creating a structure where all pupils had an opportunity to refresh themselves while enjoying their lunchtimes. Increased examples of creative and co-operative play were also evident. The clearly defined areas were respected by the children who all responded well to a limited number of simple, yet consistently enforced rules.

All Head teachers spoke warmly about this project. They strongly felt that if Positive Play was abandoned by the schools it would be a backward step. One headteacher said, “If Positive play was abandoned it would be resented by the children.” It was recognised that after lunch sessions were more successful. The children arrived to lessons more refreshed and more able to tackle the challenges in the classroom. Clearly such statements mean that standards can rise. These schools have created an improved learning environment for their children so increasing the opportunity for all the pupils in their charge to achieve their full potential.
